Top Five Herbs for Women’s Health in Ayurvedic Medicine

Hello, Radiant Souls!

Today, I’m delighted to shine a spotlight on the incredible healing power of nature’s pharmacy—Ayurvedic herbs. Specifically, let’s explore my top five favorite potent herbs that have been cherished for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for their profound benefits to women’s health. I’m going through menopause and swear by these herbs.

“Ashwagandha” is Sanskrit for “smell of the horse,” which refers to both the herb’s scent and its potential ability to increase strength. Also called “Amukkara,” “Indian winter cherry,” or “Indian ginseng.” Ashwagandha is known as the “queen of herbs” in Ayurveda, Ashwagandha is revered for its adaptogenic properties, helping to support the body’s response to stress and promote overall vitality. Numerous studies suggest Ashwagandha can directly and indirectly prevent and treat a number of diseases. Several studies highlight the benefits of ashwagandha supplements in decreasing stress and anxiety levels by lowering the cortisol level. For women, Ashwagandha is particularly beneficial for balancing hormones, supporting reproductive health, and boosting energy levels. Many studies have shown that Ashwagandha may help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce symptoms of PMS, and support fertility. It is also one of the best herbs for women during Peri-menopause or menopause to reduce symptoms by balancing hormone levels. Other Studies show that Ashwagandha contains traces of Withanolide Phytochemicals which plays a vital role in reducing inflammation.

For more than 3000 years, the proponents of Ayurvedic medicines have used Ashwagandha for women as a potent immunity booster, nervous system soother, and enhancer of longevity and vitality. The withaferin compound in ashwagandha induces apoptosis (death of unwanted cells) that helps kill the cancer cells. Together with Withanolide, which disrupts the functioning of these cancer cells, it is a boon for fighting this nasty illness. Not only that, it has been shown to increase the oxygen levels in the blood which showed significant cardiovascular benefit along with improved cognitive functioning. Thus, ashwagandha enhances brain function, and cognitive task performances such as attention, and reaction time.

Shatavari, aptly named the “she who possesses a hundred husbands,” is renowned in Ayurveda for its rejuvenating and nourishing qualities, especially for the female reproductive system. This herb is revered for its ability to support hormonal balance, enhance fertility, and alleviate symptoms of menopause and menstrual irregularities. Shatavari is an often prescribed herb for fixing an unbalanced ovarian cycle, balancing haywire hormones, and checking the menopausal blues.  Shatavari is also prized for its cooling and soothing properties, making it ideal for calming inflammation, reducing hot flushes and promoting healthy digestion.

Shatavari perfectly balances the Vata and Pitta energies. Increased or out-of-balance Pitta may look like excess heat in the body, ulcers, unexplained inflammation and burning sensations, hyper-acidity among other symptoms.  When consumed, Shatavari, optimizes the absorptive nature of the stomach and intestine and checks hyperacidity, colitis, candida, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, excessive thirst, and vomiting. Shatavari is also a very potent Cardiac tonic, it strengthens and nourishes the heart muscles, checks hypertension and cholesterol and strives to keep your heart healthy and pumping.

Triphala, a blend of three fruits—Amalaki (Indian gooseberry), Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)—is a powerhouse Ayurvedic formula cherished for its cleansing and detoxifying properties. For women, Triphala is invaluable for promoting regularity and supporting digestive health, which is crucial for overall well-being. According to one 2017 review of studies published in The Journal of Alternative Complimentary Medicine, triphala is balancing for all three doshas — or personal body compositions — and can therefore be health-promoting for all body types. Additionally, Triphala’s antioxidant-rich composition helps to rejuvenate the body at a cellular level, supporting radiant skin and vibrant health.

One of the most interesting healing properties is the amazing benefits for dental hygiene. It appears that triphala combats plaque build up, prevents cavities and harmful oral bacteria. Another fascinating study on bacteria was conducted in 2011 and published in Biofactors which found that the use of triphala promoted the growth of gut-boosting Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus bacteria while inhibiting the growth of undesirable gut bacterias like E. coli. This is great news, as more information on the gut brain connection links good bacteria to a healthy mind as well as a healthy body.

Triphala has many beneficial effects on lipid metabolism in the human body. It has been shown to aid in reducing the weight of obese individuals.1 In a study in which mice were fed a high fat diet, triphala administration was effective in decreasing weight gain as well as inhibiting elevation of LDL, VLDL and blood glucose levels. It also increased HDL levels2 and protected liver function.3 Triphala has also been shown to decrease lipid peroxidation,4 which is a major factor in the development of atherosclerosis.

In traditional Indian medicine, aloe vera is used for constipation, skin diseases, worm infestation, infections and as a natural remedy for colic. And in Chinese medicine, it’s often recommended in the treatment of fungal diseases. Aloe vera has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Native to North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Canary Islands, today, it is grown in tropical climates worldwide. From relieving heartburn to slowing the spread of cancer, researchers are only first beginning to unlock all of the powerful uses of this universal plant and its many amazing byproducts.

Aloe Vera, often referred to as the “plant of immortality” in Ayurveda, is prized for its soothing and healing properties, making it a must-have herb for women’s health. Aloe Vera is renowned for its ability to support healthy digestion, soothe inflammation, and promote glowing skin. Aloe vera juice can soften your stool when consumed thus relieving constipation. For women, Aloe Vera is particularly beneficial for relieving menstrual cramps, and soothing urinary tract discomfort. Aloe vera can also be beneficial for vaginal health as it contains anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that can soothe irritation, prevent infection and moisturize the skin.

The botanical name of aloe vera is Aloe barbadensis miller, and it belongs to the Liliaceae family. It’s a perennial, xerophytic, succulent plant that’s green and has triangular, fleshy leaves with serrated edges. he geographic origin of aloe vera is believed to be in Sudan, and it was later introduced in the Mediterranean region and most other warm areas of the world, including Africa, Asia, India, Europe and America.

Astonishingly, more than 75 potentially active components have been identified in the plant, including vitamins, minerals, saccharides, amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, lignin, saponins and salicylic acids. It provides 20 of the 22 human-required amino acids and eight of the nine essential amino acids. Results of a small 2015 study showed that aloe vera juice can alleviate some of the acid in your stomach that brings on heartburn.

Aloe vera has a number of enzymes in it, which helps in reducing inflammation. The enzymes work properly because of the presence of potassium, magnesium, zinc, calcium, copper, sodium and other minerals.

Tulsi, also known as Holy Basil, is revered in Ayurveda as a sacred herb with powerful adaptogenic and immune-modulating properties. Holy Basil not only protects the body against infections but also promotes quick healing of wounds. For women, Tulsi offers a myriad of benefits, including stress reduction, hormonal balance, and immune support. Tulsi’s calming and uplifting qualities make it an excellent ally for managing stress and anxiety, while its immune-enhancing properties help to protect against infections and promote overall resilience. Other conditions that Holy Basil can protect you from include keloids, acne, mouth ulcers, and raised scars.

If you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes, you can effectively use Holy Basil to bring down the sugar levels. Some of the diabetes symptoms you can prevent using the plant or the plant’s extracts include high cholesterol, hypertension, insulin resistance, weight gain, and excess insulin content in the blood, which is technically known as hyperinsulinemia. However, it is recommendable that you contact your doctor before commencing the use of Holy Basil, especially if you are on blood sugar controlling medication as it may reduce the blood sugar level beyond the healthy point.

For preventative use, the recommendable dosage of Holy Basil falls between 200 and 3000 mg each day. However, when being used as a treatment, the recommendable dosage ranges between 600 and 1800mg, which should be taken in several doses throughout the day.
